Lovely place to visit. For me the building,is delightfully eccentric pretend gothic architecture. That said some of the rooms inside are quite beautiful. It is well worth booking a tour. A fascinating place for everybody interested in literature and history, but also for people with no previous knowledge about Walpole at all. A fascinating historical building surrounded by extensive grounds. As the house didn't open until 12, we had plenty of time to walk round the grounds. The house was extremely interesting and I particularly enjoyed the below stairs rooms, including the bathroom! There is a cafe and shop on site, but we didn't use these. Parking was easy as there was free parking along the road ( disabled parking closer to the house ) and a free car park within easy walking distance. This free to visit English Heritage site can be viewed in 15-30 minutes. It’s not huge but starts with a few minute video, then able to see 6-8 recreated rooms. The volunteers were wonderful in sharing extra details and rooms interesting, with great views from the upper floors. Gardens in the back lovely as well, and cafe a two minute walk away in the former stables block.

Marble Hill House is looked after by English Heritage and is free entry. The house itself had a few rooms to wonder through, and the room guides seemed fairly knowledgeable. Outside there is grounds to wonder through, including gardens and an ice house. Marble Hill house is the former home of Henrietta Howard and is the last complete survivor of the elegant villas that bordered the Thames between Richmond and Hampton Court in the 18th century.
Henrietta's story is an interesting one, born into the wealthy Hobart family of Blickling Hall in Norfolk she was the mistress of king George II who gifted her the funds to build Marble Hill house.
Later the house was owned by Johnathan Peel,the brother of Sue Robert Peel and later again by the Cunard family of shipping fame.
Inside the house are numerous portraits including Henrietta, George II and other influential people if the time. There is a mahogany staircase which would have been very expensive and it is believed that George II had a hand in this two.
The poet Alexander Pope was a frequent visitor to Marble Hill and was thought to hold a candle for Henrietta but this was not reciprocated. He had a hand in the design of the gardens and was also able to invite his literary friends including Johnathan Swift. Eventually Pope withdrew no doubt due to the fact Henrietta was not romantically attracted to him.
The house is managed by English Heritage but is currently free to enter for all. There is a car park which is free for members and chargeable for non members.
There are public toilets on the ground floor of the house including an accessible toilet.
Refreshments are available at the former stable block a few minutes walk from the house.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this tiny museum. What made it for us was the warm welcome given to us by the two members of staff, who were very knowledgeable and enthusiastically explained some of the exhibits to us. They also kindly told us about other interesting things about the area too. The funniest exhibit was of the man, known as Professor Cockles, who used to walk along the bottom of the Thames, using a strange homemade breathing apparatus. Flowing aloft in the distance was the European flag today, which was personally a rather welcoming and special sight for me. Small and jolly museum with all sorts of interesting historical facts from stone age times, Duke of Cambridge and his military music school to Mick Jagger and his pals playing at Eel Pie Island, before finishing with mad professor cockles under the stairs. That’s the first time I’m in Chiswick, and the stroll around the gardens was amazing. I felt like I was somewhere in the countryside, it was so peaceful, the air quality was outstanding. We visited here on a glorious Sunday lunchtime in March. We couldn't find the car park (not sure if that was us or the signs just petered out) but were able to park on street as it was a weekend. The gardens were beautifully laid out and well used with lots of other visitors, families and dogs.
The pathways are nicely laid out and the gardens well tended and we will have to return in May when the house is open.

Excellent venue for concerts and recitals. Stunning acoustics. Attended a concert here recently with friends. This 19th century church with excellent stained glass, windows, beautiful stonework and carvings is vastly underused. We visited the shop and gallery - lovely artwork on sale, check out the craftwork modelled with recycled tins. Photographs and greeting cards by local artists were lovely. The Sparkle Festive Fair is on from 18 Nov 2022 - 20 Nov 2022. I visited the Pope's Grotto today on Sunday 17th August 2025 for the first time.
I enjoyed the interesting talk at the beginning.
I thought it was interesting that the Pope's Grotto has a piece of The Giants Causeway in it.

About Pope's Grotto
Alexander Pope's Grotto is the last remaining part of his villa, which he built in 1720 on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham. Demolished in 1808, the villa was replaced and the property became the subject of much redevelopment over the following 200 years.
Alexander Pope's Grotto is a remaining icon of one of Twickenham's most celebrated residents. It enjoys a magnetic attraction because of his enduring reputation as a poet. This relic of his life in Twickenham also acts as a reminder of English culture, literature and garden design in the 18th century. In its time, the Grotto was an object both of admiration and envy, inspiring imitation throughout England. Attended a remembrance service mass here!! It felt like very pre Vatican 2, mediaeval style worship with smells, bells and English misal style Liturgy with Gregorian chants here and there. Also back to congregation geni Flex Consecration for the Eucharist from the Priest. ( it's rare to see that even in Rome)
It was like walking through a time warp, the service felt more Roman Catholic than Anglican especially with the Hail Mary prayer and loads of byzantine icons darted round the Church.
Only criticism was the Priest and his male partner didn't come across very warm and friendly, both seemed awkward and obruptly wanted to end conversation with sighing, bad eye contact and looking at their watches.
It makes you wonder why they only have 12 people in their congregation, I would of expected more love, zeal and compassion from the holy men, especially as I'm disabled and craving for Shepherding and guidance!!!!

A fascinating place for everybody interested in literature and history, but also for people with no previous knowledge about Walpole at all. The staff is incredibly helpful, with volunteers in almost every room who are ready to explain all about Walpole's "pretty bauble of a toy house on the Themse". Absolutely lovely and one-of-a-kind historical home with a unique fairytale feeling. As someone who has spent a lot of time and observation in palaces, manor houses, etc. these is a quirkiness and charm here in all of the artistic details that is awe-inducing. A real hidden gem. Strawberry Hill House is room after room of gorgeous gothic architecture and quirky details. The volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The gardens were disappointing - more grounds to be honest so probably not worth visiting for these alone, but I wouldn’t hesitate recommending a visit to the house. I went to Turner's House in Twickenham. As a Fan of JMW Turner, it was an incredible experience. There are no crowds, just me, and helpful information is provided by the guide. It's a beautiful, recently renovated home. The guide was fantastic and provided a wealth of fascinating information on House and Turner. Wonderful! Going around won't take long—perhaps an hour. It cost £10 to enter. I recently visited Sandycombe Lodge, the beautifully renovated house of J.M.W. Turner, with my daughter. As art enthusiasts, we were eager to see Turner’s artworks in his own home. Small house over 3 floors but well worth visiting. It must have been amazing when rural. We spent an hour there. No guided tour available but staff answered any questions we had.
